SVP of Strategy and Business Planning, Retired
In 1987, Walmart sent recruiters to convince Sam Dunn to join the company. Dunn was working for a supermarket chain and Walmart was expanding into groceries. His experience with finance and accounting in that environment made him a natural fit. Hypermart USA, the large-store grocery format being experimented with, was not successful. However, leadership kept tweaking their approach, and the Supercenter was born. For Dunn, it was an early example of one of Walmart’s biggest strengths – the willingness to stay innovative and ahead of change.
