On the P and L
When Glenn Habern joined Walmart in 1976, his title was director of data processing. Today, that position would be equivalent to chief information officer. Under his leadership, Walmart’s technology was revolutionized. Not only were telephones and cash registers updated, Habern, along with Jack Shewmaker, implemented the satellite system that gave Sam Walton the ability to call all his stores from the Home Office. It also gave Walmart the ability to collect more sales data and to do so more quickly. In 1985, Habern left Walmart, but he returned in 1998 to play a role in new business development. He stayed with the company until 2007.
